Allen Police Department Enhances Ways To Keep Our Community Safe

Last month was National Night Out in Allen and all across Texas. Neighborhoods joined with their local law enforcement to enjoy this annual event that featured block parties, cookouts and other organized activities that allow neighbors to meet each other and grow as a community. This event also provides the opportunity for police officers to share ways with the local residents on how to keep their neighborhoods and families safe.

Locally, officers with the Allen Police Department were also able to share information about recent advancements in operations and new programs available to the Allen community. One of the new enhancements is a new record management system that increases APD's effeciency with data entry, collection and analysis. This new system provides officers the ability to be onsight and provide extensive details about a crime which improves the ability of detectives that are working the case. The system also provides the command staff with the ability to quickly review the compiled data so they can identify trends in local crime and respond faster to implement solutions to reduce and prevent them in the future.

APD has also formed the Street Crimes Task Force that is dedicated to focusing on all areas of property crimes from suspect development and apprehension to property recovery. As a result of this effort. property crimes have decreased and the recovery of stolen property has increased!

In an effort to prepare and improve individuals abilities to protect themselves, the APD Community Relations Unit now offers three (3) new classes for Allen residents. They are Emergency Preparedness class, Active Shooter Civilian Response class and a new addition to the R.A.D. Systems training which gives women the tools needed to defend themselves against a criminal attack.

The Emergency Preparedness class provides a checklist and display of survival items to stock, ways to prepare these basic items for storage in any type of residence and how residents can best utilize them over the course of an emergency disaster situation such as a tornado.

The Active Shooter Civilian Response class provides instructions on what to do if a shooting starts in a public place. The instruction focuses on options if confronted by an active shooter, differences between cover and concealment, and how to scout out those options quickly. APD wants to equip residents with the tactics that might save lives in a public shooting incident!!

Thr R.A.D. Systems training includes four (4) sessions of instruction , discussion and self-defense techniques for women of all ages and abilities. "The whole idea of R.A.D. is to prevent an abduction and / or becoming a victim," explained Sergeant Jon Felty."Over 80% of the time, if a female actively resists an aggressor, the attacker will abandon the attack." The next scheduled set of  R.A.D classes are November 11 and 18 and December 2 and 9. The class size is limited to ensure quality instruction and is offered several times a year.

For more information go to AllenPolice.org or for class information contact Sergeant Jon Felty of the Community Relations Unit at 214.509.4359 or via email at jfelty@cityofallen.org. Source: Allen Image
