You know a healthy lawn when you see it: LUSH, smooth, green carpet, perfect for going barefoot? So why doesn't your lawn look like that? Evidently it's a process and a mindset! AND - You have to take all the steps necessary!! Back to the basics.
The basics are pretty simple: sun, water and fertilizer. Once you get those down, everyone's happy — you and your lawn. Here's how to get started.
You have to start with a clean slate! Prep the soil. Test the pH, get rid of all weeds and bumps, enrich the soil and ensure proper drainage. A lot of people will skip this step but if you desire a lush green, healthy lawn then this step is crucial!
Now you can start on the seeding. No question but rolling out a carpet of sod is the quickest way to a beautiful lawn. If you are on a budget however, hand seeding is effective as well! And Cheaper!
Once the lawn comes in or is ready to be mowed - keep the grass a little taller. Taller grass promotes better root development, and tends to block the sun that weed seeds require to germinate.
Another crucial step is Watering! It is said that watering deep once a week helps roots extend deeper into the soil. However, for a newly seeded lawn, water every day for 5 to 10 minutes only. Your goal is to dampen the seeds without causing runoff that might wash the seeds away. Once the grass is about a half inch tall, water once a day for 15 to 20 minutes.
