In recent news: the CISD Board of Trustees recently decided to not allow students outside of the top ten percent to have class ranks. Though this may help students in the bottom 50%, it can hurt students who are near the top 10%, as some colleges give automatic admission to students in the top 25%. Also, many public universities guarentee to give at least $1,000 per year for education to any student who ranks in the top 25% of their high school class, but students without class ranks can't qulify for that. The school's population has grown steadily in the past decade, prompting the Texas University Interscholastic League to upgrade Coppell High School from the AAAA classification to AAAAA status for academic and athletic competition; they are currently placed in District 7-5A. Coppell High School has also changed their school system from a trimester system with 5 periods per day, to a semester system with 7 periods a day.
In 2008 and 2009, Coppell High School's Business Professionals of America chapters won the Best Chapter award at the State Leadership Conference. In the 2004-2005, 2005–2006, and 2006-2007 school years, the Coppell Academic Decathlon Team all went to State Competition, scoring high enough at regionals to earn a berth at the state competition. The 2005-2006 team earned 3 at region X, and 6 overall at state, and the 2006-2007 team won fourth at regionals and 19th overall at state.
