These are the top position battles in Preseason for the 2013 Dallas Cowboys.
1. Strong Safety:
-Players competing--Will Allen, Matt Johnson, J.J. Wilcox
The front runner for the position right now seems to be Will Allen. When Allen
was out with a hamstring injury, Matt Johnson got more reps with the first team
than rookie J.J. Wilcox. The rookie has had an awesome mini camp and has
been making his presence felt out on the field.
2. Right Tackle:
-Players competing--Doug Free, Jeremy Parnell
The penciled in name for this spot as of right now is Doug Free. He was the
starter most of the season in 2012, however Jeremy Parnell is being heavily
considered for this spot as well. Jeremy is about 3 years younger than Free and
the Cowboys feel he could be a rising star with how he has developed over the
past few seasons. The downside is he is still learning the position and doesn’t
have the experience like Doug Free.
-Players competing--Travis Frederick, Phil Costa, Ryan Cook
The leader for the starting position is Travis Frederick, the Cowboys first round
pick in 2013. He has been spending all of his time with the first team in OTA’s.
Phil Costa is a close second. Injuries hampered his season last year, but when
he was starting at center, the Cowboys put up solid rushing performances. As of
now, Ryan Cook is third on the depth chart at this position. 4. Strong Side Linebacker:
-Players competing--Justin Durant, Alex Albright
Even though Durant is the front runner for this position in the 2013 season,
injuries sidelined some of the season last year. While Durant was injured, the
reps went to Alex Albright. In his third year as a pro, Albright great athleticism
and versatility and will push Justin Durant for the job. 5. Third Receiver:
-Players competing--Terrence Williams, Dwayne Harris
With both Dez Bryant and Miles Austin starting on the outsides, the third receiver
position is up for grabs. Terrence Williams, the rookie out of Baylor was drafted
to be in the mix at receiver. Dwayne Harris has experience being it is his third
year in the league. Both have been splitting reps at this position and in the 2013
season you will see a lot of these two switch off as the third and fourth receiver
option for Tony Romo. 6. Back-up Running Back:
-Players Competing--Joseph Randle, Lance Dunbar, Phillip Tanner
With the Demarco Murray as the #1 option at running back in Dallas, Joseph
Randle, Lance Dunbar, and Phillip Tanner for the back up running back position.
Joseph Randle is the early front runner in this competition. He is a rookie out of Oklahoma State drafted in the 2013. With his versatility and catching ability he
seems to be the lock here. However, Lance Dunbar, when gotten the opportunity
has impressed coaches. Phillip Dunbar is at the fourth spot on the depth chart
as of right now. 7. Second Tight End:
-Players competing--Gavin Escobar, James Hanna
Gavin Escobar is the early lock here, but James Hanna with his experience will
push Escobar for this role. Escobar was drafted in the second round so he will
have plenty of chances to show Cowboy fans why he was drafted that high.
Also, Witten is beginning to show some wear in tear in the health category. The
hope from the Cowboys is that Escobar will eventually be a replacement for
Witten in the future. 8. Nickel Back:
-Players competing--Orlando Scandrick, B.W. Webb
Orlando Scandrick has been the slot corner in Dallas the last few years. With the
pick of B.W. Webb in the fourth round however shows Scandrick they are looking
for an upgrade at his position. B.W. Webb will push Scrandrick to keep his spot.
Even though Webb is not expected to win this position, he will add depth to a
strong corner back position and will most likely be slotted in at number four on
depth chart here. 9. Starting Guards:
-Players competing--Macknezy Bernadeau, Nate Livings, Ronald Leary
Both Macknezy Bernadeau and Nate Livings are the obvious two to start at this
position, however if injuries hamper these two Ronald Leary will get the start.
Leary could also be considered as a starter if he has a terrific preseason,
however that is unexpected at this point. 10. Full Back:
-Players competing--Lawrence Vickers, Dante Rosario
This is an interesting battle because it is against players at different positions.
Vickers is struggling to stay healthy, and if he can’t do that then Rosario will
be the starter at this position. Even though Rosario is listed as a tight end, he
has had some experience at the Half back/full back position. Depending on
Vickers it will mean that the Cowboys will have 3 Tight ends and 1 fullback or 4
Tight ends on the 53-man roster.
