It’s that time of the year when everyone is pumped up with
their New Year resolutions and the gyms are packed with an influx of
“highly-motivated” people, myself included.
Date 8 of 2014; are you on track with your personal and
business goals? I am not, behind with two of my goals: business wise, I have a
goal of taking one of my contacts out to lunch every day and I didn’t do so on last
Sunday nor Tuesday. I also have a personal goal of exercising 20 minutes every
day and I haven’t done any of that. What happened? Last Sunday, I was the only one
working in the office and worked late and couldn’t find any last minute lunch
goers. Tuesday, my 2.5 years old
daughter was sick with ear infection over last weekend and was discharged from
daycare last Monday. I had back-to-back meetings and barely get time to grab
lunch. What about my exercising 20 minutes a day? Again my 2.5 years old
daughter had been sick and of course it didn’t help that my 13-month-old boy
was just recovering from a strep throat and flu. Jumping start a whole new
career with two little ones doesn’t allow too much personal time. I am already
working around the clock, like 5am to 10pm on good days while the kids are not
sick or having nightmares. Very well justified? Certainly acceptable in lots of
moms’ eyes? The truth is that you can choose to get stuck and frustrated with
all these excuses of why you didn’t do things you said you will or feel accomplished
and like a hero that you kept your words and find a way to get things done
despite of all the curve balls life throw at you. This reminds me of a very
popular post in China last year, I call it the formula of success. Let’s break it down.
1+0.01=1.01, if you multiply it by 365 days in a year, you
get 37.8. In another word, more than 37 times of 1.
1-0.01=0.00, if you multiply it by 365 days in a year, you
get 0.03 in another word, merely 3% of 1.
That’s the power of doing a little extra every day
consistently. It can get you a long way over the cause of a year. In case
anyone is curious, I also included the next level equation. 1+0.01+0.01=1.02, if you strive for another
0.1 more everyday, times by 365 days, that equals 1377.4! How would you feel if
you are able to double, 10 times or 1377 times your goal? You don’t need to do
crazy things and spend lots of money, all it takes is stick to your words and do
a little extra everyday.
Unfortunately, for us who are friends with excuses, it only
takes a year for to drop to 3% of whatever we say we are up to accomplish.
Simply put, it’s the mathematical proof that little extra
combine with consistency makes you successful.
Date 8 of 2014, it’s high time that I broke up with excuses
and takes on consistency. Put this formula of success in my wallet and remind
myself to take action 365 days of the year.
