I could have added AGAIN to the title! I’m a Boomer, I admit it. Baby Boomers are the post WWII generation
that was born between 1946 and 1964. I have
found a lot of interesting articles about the generation including several that
break the generation down into subsets which have different characteristics. The bottom line though is that this is a huge
group which has profoundly changed everything around them as they have
progressed from school through careers, having a family and buying real estate. There is no reason to think this will change. \ The youngest boomers turn 50 this year and the oldest of the
generation are now reaching retirement age.
How is that going to change the real estate market? It’s hard to predict what trends will emerge
as this group approaches and goes into the next phase of their lives, but you
can count on the fact that they will change the market.
Some of the major trends that are emerging include
downsizing (also referred to as right sizing or retirement sizing),
retirement/resort type communities, upsizing into multi-generational homes,
staying put and remodeling, leaving the suburbs for either a more urban area or
to move into the country, and the list goes on.
If you can imagine it, the boomers are probably ahead of you!
I find this a really interesting subject and
plan to devote a series of future blogs to the subject of Baby Boomer housing,
each identifying one of the trends or aspects of what this group is looking for
and relating it to our real estate market here in North Texas.
