If you are a burger connoisseur or just like a good burger you’re in luck: New Hope Grocery is back in business. Just 8 miles from McKinney (take Hwy 380 east, then go north on FM 1827) you’ll find the best burger. Ever. No kidding. Last month I treated my 17 year old nephew to a New Hope burger for attending a fundraising luncheon with me. He has…well, we’ll call it “discriminating” tastes. He wasn’t into the chicken salad served at the luncheon so I promised him a New Hope Burger on the way home. Two bites into his burger he stopped and solemnly said, “Seriously…this is the best burger I’ve ever had.”
What makes the New Hope Grocery burgers so good? They’re made from 100% brisket, ground fresh daily. They’re also cooked on a 90 year old steak grill that came from what was once The Woods Café on the McKinney Square. All of New Hope Grocery’s food is made to order (vs. pre-cooked). Some of the staple side items remain available – French Fries, Tater Tots and Onion Rings – and they’ve added Fried Chips, something you’ll definitely want to sample. Every time I’ve been there I see multiple people come in to pick up take-out orders.
New Hope Grocery has been around since the turn of the last century (that’s the early 1900’s). Don and Callie Dunn purchased New Hope Grocery in October of 1976, added a grill to the existing grocery store and what became known as the “Dunn Burger” was born. As word traveled the grill became the focal point. Don and Callie established the reputation of unbeatable burgers along with some pretty amazing BBQ. Eventually the grocery business was dismissed but the grill continued and with good reason. Hence New Hope Grocery’s sign “No groceries, just great burgers.”
Last year Don left this world; a great loss to family, friends and the community. Our condolences and sympathies go to Callie in losing her life partner with whom she had shared so much. Subsequently and understandably, Callie closed New Hope Grocery. But when a for-sale sign appeared on the property, new residents Sarah Trice and Chris Dehart saw the opportunity. Sarah and Chris had moved to New Hope after New Hope Grocery closed, they’d never even had a New Hope Grocery Burger. But clearly they’d ‘heard tell’ and with instruction and support from Callie, they picked up the torch and re-established the tradition of some pretty incredible burgers. You can visit their Facebook page or the New Hope Grocery Website (newhopegrocery.com) for more information including a map and a menu.
So thanks to Callie and Don for establishing a legacy in New Hope Grocery, and kudos to Sarah and Chris for keeping that legacy alive. Here’s wishing you all the best!
New Hope Grocery is open Monday – Friday from 11am – 6:30pm (and they’ll take your call-in orders right up to 6:30pm!) and Saturdays from 7am to 2pm. They’re closed on Sundays.
Seriously…it’s the best burger you’ll ever have.

"“I was lucky to have Diane as my agent. Her unbiased opinion helped us to decide which house and which neighborhood to pick. She was very helpful in the entire renting process and was always there for follow up questions. Given that we were unfamiliar with the DFW area, her professional knowledge and friendly approach really made our relocation smooth and easy. It was a pleasure to work with her!”
