Peer pressure can be a powerful thing. We are naturally concerned with how other people perceive us and we have an innate desire to be liked, respected and admired. While wanting to look good to others can be harmless most of the time, this tendency can get you into trouble when it comes to large purchases such as that big, beautiful Dallas home you’ve always wanted.
However, when you take a cold hard look at what you can afford, you might find that buying that sizable dream house would be a financial stretch. Your bank would just barely lend you enough money and you would struggle to make the mortgage payments every month.
If anything happened, such as a drop in wages or an unexpected layoff, you would get into trouble very quickly and your house might even be taken away. Your best choice financially would be to buy the smaller house you can easily afford, that is cozy and has just enough room for your family to be comfortable.
At this point you need to decide: is it more important for you to have the house that you can’t afford but will impress your friends, or the modest house that suits your budget? Many people, when faced with this choice, have chosen the larger house anyway and now find themselves financially stressed.
The main point here is to buy the home that suits your budget and your needs, not anyone else’s. Maybe your friends make more money than you do, or they are buying a house beyond their means, but that really shouldn’t matter to you. Also, if your friends are the type who will judge you for having a smaller house, are they really your friends after all? If you let peer pressure and the perceptions of other people influence your real estate purchases too much, you can end up putting yourself in a dangerous position.
