I attended a great class today about personal safety! It is always good to be aware of what is going on around to avoid finding yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
Basic points from the class-
1. Profiling vs stereotyping Profiling is based on behaviors and actions. Stereotyping is based on appearances.
When observing what is going around you... it is more important to be on the look out for other's behaviors and actions than their appearance. Keep in mind that most of our most notorious serial killers have been white, normal looking males- the guy next door.
2. Vulnerability and opportunity
The "bad guys" are looking for things that make you vulnerable (age, gender, distractions, impairments, isolation, complacency). They must also have opportunity. This all boils down to BE AWARE of everything that is going on around you. Are you alone? Are you on your cell phone? Are you walking by alley ways that are not visible?
3. Trust your instincts!
If it feels wrong, it probably is. Trust your gut feelings. If your wrong and there was nothing to be alarmed about- no harm, no foul. If you are right and you ignore it... well, we all watch the news.
To add some personal safety thoughts that my dad gave me... a. Let people know where you are and when to expect to hear from you. b. If you feel something is wrong, try not to turn your back to the trouble. c. Look people in the eye and say hi. I know this sounds like weird advise, BUT an attacker is far less likely to attack you because you now have an image of them in your head. d. Know your strengths!!!! The elbow and knees are some of the greatest weapons you carry with you everywhere! The eyes and the groin (for men) are the most sensitive... See the connection??
I highly recommend a self defense course for everyone... knowing how to react in a situation could save your life! Awareness is the key!
