This is that wonderful time of year that families spend around the pool in the backyard and enjoying the great summer weather. Along with that fun comes added dangers when around water, especially pools! Tragedy can happen so fast or in what seems like an instant so if you are a residential pool and/or spa owner please learn more about what you can do to keep everyone safe.
One of the first things all pool and/or spa owners should do is adopt water safety steps to prevent children from accessing the water when there is no adult supervision. Lock your gate to your backyard so nobody wanders in for a swim unsupervised because children do tend to wander off at times. Also have procedures in place for when adults are there to supervise.
By asking and answering these critical questions, you can gauge the effectiveness of your water safety measures, and determine what steps need to be taken to protect children from drowning and submersion injuries:
Is there a fence around the perimeter of your pool or spa?
Are there self-closing and self-latching gates?
Are there door, gate or pool alarms in use?
Does your pool have anti-entrapment drain covers that are compliant with the P&SS Act?
Are all pool and spa covers in working order?
Has the public pool or spa you use been inspected to ensure it is compliant with federal, state and local laws?
Has someone in the family received training in CPR, first aid and emergency response?
Another vital step in assuring the safety of a residential pool or spa is to have it inspected by a trained and qualified inspector. Properly maintained facilities reduce the risk of drownings, submersion injuries and entrapments.
I hope this information is helpful and makes every homeowner aware of the dangers and the easiness of taking a few extra steps to prevent tragedy from every happening at your home and within your family!
Stay safe and don't forget the sunscreen!
