There is a long history of wine
production in the State of Texas. In
areas of Texas with dry and sunny climate wines have been produced that have
been compared to that of the Portuguese wines. During the 1650’s in present day
El Paso Texas Spanish
Missionaries began the
earliest wine production in the State. The Texas wine industry is
continuing on a steady pace of expansion throughout the entire state. The
growing industry has been followed by a reputation as a major wine growing
region in the United States.
This all came to a crashing halt during the prohibition days which led to the
wine industry to virtually disappear. The effects of Prohibition can still be
felt by the industry due to the vast amount of dry counties within Texas.
Prohibition caused Texas to not be able to have a revival until the 1970’s
beginning in the High plains near Lubbock Texas, but ever since has seen a vast
amount of expansion. Throughout all of Texas roughly 2 million gallons of wine
is produced annually with that number on the rise every year with over 113
bonded wineries. The City of Grapevine in Texas has 7 wineries, Delaney Vineyards, Cross Timbers
Winery, D’vine Wine of Texas, Farina’s Winery, La Buena Vida Vineyards, Su Vino
Winery. Tours and taste testing are a great way to explore and experience the
award winning wines ofGrapevine Texas.
