This year’s US Open golf Championship at Merion Country Club in Ardmore, PA was one of the most exciting finishes in golf this year. There were a slew of big names that had the chance to capture the championship and be crowned the 2013 US Open Champion. Teeing off in the final round names such as Luke Donald, Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Rickie Fowler, etc. all had a chance at the title. The eventual winner was Justin Rose.
What made this championship so different than the last few US Open sites was that Merion only measured out at 6,996 yards. The shortest US Open golf course in length in the last nine years, the last being Shinnecock Hill in New York. With that being said, +1 won the championship (Justin Rose), and only 16 players finished under +10 for the week. This championship proved that golf courses don’t need to be long to be challenging. Because of the course length, the USGA did not use graduated rough like the last few US Open championships. Instead, they made it brutally long all over the golf course. On TV, you couldn’t even see the ball when it went into the first cut of rough just off the fairway. Merion proved to be one of the most challenging US Open venues we have seen in recent years and hats off to Justin Rose for taming the brutal test.
