I arrived back from my morning walk with my dogs, Charlotte and Lily with a spring in my step and a renewed feeling of gratitude for having the privilege to live here.
On my walk I pass a grove of trees near a small lake between 2 subdivisions and I could hear a woodpecker pecking away with that peculiar staccato sound. Across the golf course I could see a number of large nests high in the treetops forming part of a crows rookery. A few yards on we walked over a small wooden bridge straddling a creek and in the water near the bank was a pure white egret who took off in fright startled to see us so early in the morning.
The sun was just visible, shedding its rays onto the undulating manmade hillocks on the golf course where 6 large grey herons stood, heads tucked down facing the rising sun. As we drew nearer a couple of them stretched their large wings and took off. The others stayed in place as if cast in stone and several mallards moved away from the waters edge.
Two cormorants sat on a rock in the middle of the lake redding themselves for a morning of fishing. They always make me smile as they remind me of the sea.
I took these photos with my iPhone and two 30lb dogs rearing to go!
